Removal of the volcanic materials again

Progress of the works...

23 July
Also in this area the stratigraphic sequence is simple, but removing of the volcanic materials is quite tough work.

The tunnel

Until now we have excavated in the tunnel in the area indicated as "Photo A" bellow, and now on the other side of the wall we found an aperture like a drain indicated as "Photo B".
But we are uncertain how functioned that tunnel yet,
and the excavation in this year will be closed soon.
So we have to postpone the conclusion about it.

In the tunnel

We found that an architectural element along the wall is a kind of a tunnel that leads to "Area 12".
We have removed all the soil filled in it. And now you can see the trace that shows a water pipes were pulled out on the floor.

What's this ? (2)

The other day we found an unknown architectural element along the wall.
And there was a square shaped hole filled up with soil on it.

We dug in the hole, and found a small tunnel below. It may be a kind of channel..
But it is still unknown where this channel comes from, where that leads to
and how that worked.

Protecting the pavement of the cistern

We covered the entire paved floor of the cistern with non-weaved cloth, and spread it with sand.

What's this ?

During the removing the soil before the eruption of 472 A.D. we found an architectural element along the wall. it is united with the wall. But it doesn't seem to be a normal foundation of a wall formed in the earth.

The cistern

We finished the excavation in the cistern.
We could revealed only a part of the west wall of it. So the dimensions of it are unknown yet.

On the bottom of the cistern we found that the floor was renovated at least once.

Reinforcement work around the doorway

To prevent the collapse of the wall, we inserted an wooden beam along the upper edge of the doorway.

 (Before the reinforcement works)
 (After them)

Bottom of the cistern

Volcanic materials cover directly the bottom of the cistern.
After the removal of them you can see its bottom with impermeable finish.

In front of the doorway

It is still unknown why they leaned some roofing tiles and a limestone threshold plate on a wall on top of the layer of volcanic scoriae.

And after the removal of tiles

We found a fragment of the right foot of a marble statue.

Eaves with roofing tiles around the dome

We made a reinforcement work for the eaves.
Some tiles for the eaves are already fragmented in some pieces on their original positions. We inserted steel rods to underlay them.
