Before the eruption in 472 A.D.

Digging up a test trench in order to check the stratigraphic sequence before the eruption.

Removal of the fragments of collapsed walls

See you again, Maria.

We are very grateful for your participation in the excavation,
and we look forward to working together again.

Plowed Ground

We are revealing the ground just before the eruption in 472 A.D..
May be, it was plowed up, and then the surface was covered with the volcanic materials of that eruption.

The plowed ground in this area was revealed.
And in order to facilitate photogrammetric work from the air, we draw some lines on the ground as a guide.

Removal of the volcanic materials

Progress of the works...

In this area the stratigraphic sequence is simple, but removing of the materials is quite tough work.

Participants on the first day

Stone pavement

Cleaning work to re-examine the stone pavement, which was revealed in the south end of the excavation in 2004.

Resumption of the excavation

After three weeks intermission of works we resumed the excavation.
Now we have to continue removing the volcanic materials  carried and accumulated by some flows until the red line level shown on the photo below.

As usual, these volcanic materials are very stiff.

Excavation area in 2012

We started the excavation on 16 July in this year.

Currently, we remove the remains of volcanic materials of the eruption in 472 AD.
